When we first moved back to Manila with a new baby in tow, I remember feeling rather unconfident about my ability to breastfeed.

In my search to replenish some of the items I had bought in Australia,  I stumbled across www.babymama.ph: a one-stop online shop for your breastfeeding needs including pumps that really work.

You don’t know how happy it made me to find a site that I could order from with just a few clicks (Paypal friendly for the win!) and items would be delivered to me in less than a day.

Having this site around made me feel stronger in my stand to breastfeed for as long as I could. Because as we all know, breastfeeding takes time and commitment, but it is also one of the sweetest ways to bond with your child and offers you a fulfilling feeling like no other when you see your baby thrive solely on what your body provides.

Going back to work recently after my two month maternity leave made direct breastfeeding during the day difficult. So I was more than thrilled when Mi’Ann the owner of Baby Mama PH recently invited me to review their latest travel-friendly pump: Spectra 9 Plus.

Spectra1

The verdict after a few weeks of use: I absolutely LOVE this pump. Storing milk for those times I’m away from Nara has never been easier. Here’s why I believe the Spectra 9 Plus and I will have a long and faithful relationship:
Spectra5

1. It’s super light: barely a pound and fits in just one hand. I take it with me everywhere on any trip and don’t have to worry about a sore shoulder or excess baggage charges.

2. It runs on rechargeable batteries, so no need to look for an electric socket or car charger while you’re out. One charge can give me between 8-10 pumping sessions (almost a week’s worth). Recharging it takes just an hour plugged in! It will also let you know when it’s fully charged.

3. Its screen also serves as a timer, so I don’t need to keep looking at my watch or phone.

4. It offers a massage function which helps promote let down and brings out more milk.

5. It’s a double pump, which means you can work both breasts at the same time to make things move convenient.

6. It remembers your personal settings, so  you don’t have to configure it to the strength you prefer every single time.

6. It works as a closed system with an anti-moisture chamber so I’m assured I don’t get any condensation from my milk on any of the tubing unlike the design of another famous breast pump brand.

7. Its breast shields fit comfortably and come in two sizes so everyone can be comfortable.

8. It is incredibly quiet, so no need to worry that you’ll wake up the husband or baby in the middle of the night.

So there you have it, my new best friend. I can’t recommend this pump enough. I will be singing its praises to anyone who is interested in a pump that is PERFECT for travel, work, or anyone who needs to pump around 2-3 sessions a day.

Price: 9,000PHP

(When you think about it, this investment is equivalent to two months worth of formula and much better for your child.)

Note: Mi’Ann of BabyMama.ph has just restocked this pump on her site (I was supposed to post this review months ago, but the Spectra 9 plus was sold out so quickly.) If interested I highly recommend ordering soon because they fly off the shelves FAST.

Do they have a sale month on this product? Ill be breastfeeding soon 🙂

  2. Hi. How do you know if the pump is charging? I unboxed mine today and I plug it in but the screen does not indicate if its charging. Thanks

    • Hi Jed. I suggest checking the plug that it comes with and making sure the prongs portion is put on properly. The pump should definitely light up when plugged and show you that it is charging. Fixing the prongs is usually the issue. Hope this helps!

My baby is 10 months already… and my milk is not that much as before… should i still buy new dual elecyric pump? Or will i be just waist money if i do? Should i keep on pumping even if i only get 1 oz in one session? As of now im able to extract 3.5 to 4 oz each session. Am i doing great with that amount? Please help me… thank you. God bless..
    I think spectra9 is great.

    • Hi Amor,

It really depends on for how much longer you plan to pump and if you plan to be away from your child often enough to need a pump. From my personal experience, four ounces per session really isn’t bad. And by 10 months your child will be eating solids more frequently too. I highly recommend speaking to your paediatrician to decide what is best for your situation and also if you plan to continue nursing. If you do, I think the Spectra 9 is a wonderful, very convenient pump. Hope this helps!

  4. Hi, can you kindly share how does the pump indicate that it is fully charged? I have been charging my new pump for hours and the battery is still blinking at one bar only.

    • Hi Ang,

I suspect you pumps plug isn’t properly connected, so it isn’t charging well. The pump should be fully charged in about an hour and a half based on my experience. Separate the plug from the tongs and snap it back into place. I hope this helps!
