I Am Kim

“If you’re ever up north, you should try I Am Kim, it’s really good,” mentioned Rica Peralejo the last time I saw her at an event. Then, I saw Patty Laurel do a blog post about this unique little restaurant that specialises in serving different kinds of Bibimbap and I knew it was a sign to seek them out the next time we were in the area. I’m very happy I did.

I Am Kim is located at the lower ground floor of the newly opened Estancia Mall at Capital Commons.

Its interiors are fun and casual and on early weekdays the entire Estancia is practically empty (for now).

The very busy looking man is Him Uy de Baron, an acclaimed chef in the Philippine food scene and one of the masterminds behind the restaurant’s concept and dishes.

They decided on the name I Am Kim, because it’s easy to spell, remember, and immediately brings memories of delicious Korean food.

We were treated to two delicious appetizers. The first one was Adobo Shoestring Fries: adobo flakes with a sous-vide egg with sweet potato fries glazed with adobo sauce and a bit of kimchi. This was definitely tasty, but not all that easy to eat.

The second appetizer was Korean Fried Dumplings: Chicken and shiitake seasoned with aromatic soy, deep friend and coated in Korean spicy sauce. This is served with shiso to wrap and eat. These were absolutely delicious.

They had just the right amount of spice and crunch and reminded us of well-loved Korean fried chicken. I highly recommend ordering this dish when you go.

Carl decided to try their make your own bibimbap, which offered such a wide variety that it was pretty difficult to decide. He was impressed they even offered different types of rice.

Here was his bibimbap which came with a siding of potato salad and kimchi as well as two different sauces that he chose. He said it was protein packed and really good. I have to add that I Am Kim makes all of these items from scratch.

We went for the medium portions for both our dishes and honestly, the servings were HUGE. You could easily order a salad, appetizer, and share one medium bibimbap and be full.

I decided to try their best selling Umami Bomb Bibimbap: Korean sausage (ground meat wrapped in shisso), spinach, carrots, bean sprouts, mushroom teppanyaki, umami butter, bulgogi and gocuchang sauce, topped with a raw or sous-vide egg.

This piping hot bowl of goodness comes with a generous portion of umami butter which tastes incredible. You mix everything together and partake of each glorious mouthful. As you can tell, I really enjoyed my meal.

We also washed everything down with a delicious cold lemonade and lemongrass iced tea (both made fresh). In the afternoon they offer a lighter menu that has quesadillas and burritos.

I Am Kim isn’t a franchise, it’s a proudly locally grown concept that makes everything from scratch– from their sauces, their meats, to their marmalades. Everything was tasty and well thought out. Prices were very fair and portions were generous. Bottom line, I would happily head back and hope they decide to open one closer to where we live.
