Book Report

I promised myself that in 2012 I would devote more of my time to picking up a good book or in the case of my always hungry Kindle, downloading it.

It’s not that I ever fully stopped reading (which is like asking someone to stop drinking water), but there were a few months of travel in 2011 where I was so caught up in research and preparations for some crazy journeys that I neglected my pure love for uncovering a magical story page by page.

So without further chatter, here are a few books I’ve read in the first two months of this year:

Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides

This book came recommended to me by a twitter follower and after finishing it, I completely agree it deserved to win the Pulitzer. It was so enjoyable to watch Eugenides weave a tale so full of rich characters using a non-linear narrative.  I don’t think I’ve ever read a story told quite the same way. Well worth it.

Just Kids by Patti Smith

Poet, musician, writer, and all around cool person. Patti tells the story of her life with artist Robert Mapplethorpe as if she was talking to a good friend. I found myself enjoying every page of this work of non-fiction. It is simple, raw, and beautiful.

Lost City of Z by David Grann

I wanted to love this book. I mean, who isn’t fond of the idea of an Indiana Jones-like character braving the fake paradise that is the Amazon. But sadly, I thought it fell a bit short. It read more like a research paper than a flowing work of non-fiction. But I must say, all the different ailments, insects, and animals listed in this book were fascinating.

So what good book have you read recently?
