The boys from Versailles

I first heard of Phoenix in 2001. I was riding in a friend’s car feeling absolutely crappy from a recent breakup and If I Ever Feel Better started playing.

Thomas crooned about how an end could be a start and there was much more dignity in defeat than a brother’s victory and like any self-respecting fan, his words spoke to me.

Nine years later, I am happy to report that Thomas and I have moved on from our broken hearts (he’s now with the brilliant Sofia Coppola). But my love for Phoenix has remained constant. I’ve followed their music career from United, Alphabetical, It’s Never Been Like That, and Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix and love how their songs feel fresh without changing the groovy melodies I’ve come to expect from them.

Saw them for the second time last week and I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of watching one of my favourite bands of all time.

I shall leave you with a video shot by my friend, Erwin aka the concert king. This was their encore, Rome.  Enjoy.
