Typhoon Yolanda struck six months ago. And yes, we all did our part and offered immediate help to those affected by this catastrophe, but it’s important to remember that the road to recovery isn’t paved overnight. It’s crucial to give survivors a chance to return to normal life and their former (or perhaps new) livelihoods.

That’s where programs like The Peter Project can help. This project was introduced to us in Sydney by our friend Mireille, whose mom is an active member of the Negrense Volunteers for Change Foundation (NVC): the organization responsible for putting this wonderful livelihood program together. As of this blog post, the NVC Foundation has been able to provide 1,055 boats to fisherman who lost their means of income when Yolanda hit.

It doesn’t take much to donate a boat. A few months ago, a group of us in Sydney chipped in to donate one together. We decided to call it ‘Red Rock’ as an homage to the place many of us now call home.

PeterProjectWe were able to pool enough money for a fibre glass boat so no trees had to be sacrificed for our contribution.
