The Girl + The Bull has always been one of our favorite go-to restaurants down south. In fact, Carl and I used to have an almost once-a-month tradition of heading there for Saturday lunch, so we could enjoy their famous buttermilk fried chicken with brioche French toast. We would often end our meal with a takeout order of their Faux Twix (more on this later) which we enjoyed at Magnum Opus with our favorite lattes while we planned world (more like work) domination.
Alas, all good things must come to an end and BF’s loss is now Makati’s gain with The Girl + The Bull having moved to Makati just a few weeks ago. They are currently serving lunch at 12/10 along Guijo St. while waiting for their new home closer to the CBD to open. Carl and I were recently invited by lovely owners Thea & Gab to check out their temporary home and new items on their menu. Here’s a quick look at 12/10‘s interiors:
Here are the dishes we tried during our lunch (words in bold are how they’re labeled on the menu):
rocket salad, orange, walnut, miso: Refreshing and a great balance of textures. The miso cream is a nice touch.
tuna + beet tartare, mango, yuzu, horseradish: Beautiful colors and perfectly flavoured. The addition of beets gave it an earthy taste that reminded us a lot of our time in Sydney. (Fun tip: Australians love their beets, they even put a generous slice in hamburgers)
rice cake “cache e pepe”: A different twist on this much loved simple cheese and pepper pasta. The sticky rice had a gnocchi-like consistency and the cheese and pepper weren’t overpowering.
mussels, green curry, coconut, lime, basmati: I decided to try something new for my main dish and went with Thea’s recommendation for this mussels dish. I’m so glad I listened. This was the freshest, tastiest mussel dish I’ve had in Manila. The coconut rice was such a nice touch and the sauce was so good, I didn’t want my meal to end.
It was so good, it deserved another photo
pork belly, beet root, spinach, peanut: Carl chose to go with the pork belly which was excellent. The pork was super soft and well seasoned. The peanuts and beet root added another layer of flavor, I would never have thought to combine but combined perfectly for a party in our mouths.
faux twix (felchin chocolate, caramel, shortbread): And, of course, no trip to The Girl + The Bull is complete without having the Faux Twix for dessert. Best eaten with your fingers, I highly recommend having it with a coffee from Restock (catered by Magnum Opus) just across 12/10.
Thank you, Thea & Gab for inviting us to revisit your delicious dishes. Congratulations on this new chapter together! We can’t wait to be back soon.
