One part philosophy, one part modernist art, and one part warm little tale. This graphic novel was a smorgasbord of goodness.

I’ve always had a love-hate relationship with stories that weave beads of ideology into their tapestry; those that attempt to make your mind see the universe and its workings from another looking glass. For instance, I loathed Sophie’s World but revered The Fountainhead.

And though it took American artist David Mazzucchelli a decade to perfect this magnum opus, I felt he used the years quite well. Asterios Polyp holds just the right balance of thought stimulating notes and gorgeous visuals. Definitely a book that belongs on your shelf.
