I was recently invited by the wonderful people behind Laura Mercier Philippines to spend an afternoon learning valuable tips from their top makeup artist Michelle Draper.
Michelle is one of Laura’s chief global artists. She travels the world extensively for the brand with the purpose of sharing her skin perfecting expertise and nifty tricks. I had a great time with some former colleagues while we watched Michelle turn a pretty face into a flawless one.
Here are some of the tips I learned from Michelle:
1. Always start with your foundation before your concealer. You often discover that you don’t need to use as much concealer as you planned, because the foundation does most of the work.
2. Use your fingers when applying primer and foundation to the skin. Laura likes to say, “You’re not painting a house!”
3. When countouring or doing eye-makeup, remember that light makeup brings things forward while dark makeup brings things back. For instance, if you have deep-set eyes, best to go easy on the dark shadows.
4. Use a puff not a brush for your setting powder. Let the puff really put in the work to let the powder blend well on the skin.
5. Avoid putting makeup directly from bottle to face. Use your hand as a pallet, so you can have more control. Also to warm the products.
6. Look at your chest when deciding on your foundation shade. There’s nothing more unnatural than having a shade that is lighter or darker than your neck and chest.
7. She recommends using Laura Mercier’s Caviar Eye Stick (a creamy stick eyeshadow) before putting your powder eyeshadow to make the powder stay on the whole day.
8. If you’re heading to the gym, just use Laura Mercier’s new Radiance Bronze Primer (more on this product later) by itself for a healthy flushed no makeup look.
9. Use a pop of coloured eyeshadow closer to the lash-line.
10. Don’t be afraid to play with color for your eyes and lips, but you need to be comfortable with the colors you choose. You need something that suits your personality.
Laura Mercier has always been one of those brands that I’ve found to deliver exactly what they promise. It’s no wonder many of their products wind up with a holy grail status. Personally, I’ve been a fan of their Tinted Moisturizer in Almond and Secret Camouflage Concealer in SC-4 for years.

Foundation Primer Radiance Bronze:
This primer offers the skin a healthy summer sheen. It can be used under your favorite foundation for a hint of sun or on its own for the “I just spent the day by the infinity pool” look.
It may look too dark for lighter skin tons, but once blended it goes on light with the perfect amount of summer glow.
This liner goes on so smoothly and stays on the whole evening. Use brown instead of black during the day for a softer, more natural look.
Crème Smooth Lip Color in Mango:
I love this shade. It’s the right amount of of peach and pink that brings out the warmth in any skin tone. It’s creamy without being too opaque. Perfect for everyday use and just the right amount of color.
Offers the tiniest dab of pink color, but it keeps lips shiny and soft for much longer than your usual clear gloss. I think this would be great to put on top of your favorite lipstick for extra shine.
