VMV Hypoallergenics’ Red Better Line and Why I Love It

While in Sydney over the holidays, portions of my face and neck got red and itchy from the dry weather. My mom, a long time rosacea sufferer, highly recommended I try VMV Hypoallergenics’ Red Better Line and I’m so glad I did. Here are the four products I tried and my thoughts on each one:

Red Better Deeply Soothing Cleansing Cream (895php)

What is it: A pleasantly palliative cleanser that contains monolaurin, coconut oil + antioxidants.

Personal Thoughts: I have been using this cream cleanser on my skin in the morning. Even though it says to wet the skin before rubbing the cleanser, I prefer to rub it on my dry skin and then gently rinse off with cold water. It isn’t drying at all so I don’t get that tight feeling I often get with foaming cleansers.

Red Better Daily Therapy Moisturizer (915php)

What is it: A light, non-comodgenic moisturizer to soothe angry skin.

Personal Thoughts: I’ve been using this moisturizer day and night and have seen a great improvement on my skin without any breakouts or irritation. It’s quite light weight so it doesn’t feel sticky or heavy. Definitely a keeper.

Red Better Flare Up Balm also known as Red Better Calm the Heck Down Balm (2,015php)

What is it: A potent balm that calms angry skin. Dot a tiny speck on affected areas and spread gently. Apply 1x-a-day (up 2x-a-day maximum) for up to 2 weeks only.

Personal Thoughts: This is the one product in the line that my mom highly recommended. It is a thick semi-clear salve which has helped make some red patches on my neck less itchy and red. I’ve been using it for less than a week and the results are definitely there.

Red Better Spot Corrector (525php)

What is it: A spot corrector for acne and other red irritations on the face.

Personal thought: This one didn’t seem as effective as my trusty benzoyl peroxide for acne, but it did certainly hep on some red areas underneath my chin which I suspect were caused by toothpaste irritation.

The verdict: I would highly recommend the Red Better Line to anyone who suffers from rosacea, eczema, or just very sensitive skin. These products help balance your skin’s normal PH, calm irritations, and remove redness all without any steroids.

Diode Laser Hair Removal at HOO Center for Dermatology

If you’ve been a regular reader of my blog, you’ll know that I’ve been loyally going to HOO Center for Dermatology for the last 6 months.

I’m a fan of their no-nonsense take on offering you better skin and their investment in quality products and services for their clients.

Here’a a little bit more background about their clinics:

“First launched as House of Obagi in 2007, its promise was to transform skin in 6 1/2 weeks with its triple threat arsenal of prescription-strength Obagi Medical Products, Board-certified Dermatologists, and effective in-office treatments. Its main products, the Obagi Nu-Derm System, is known for addressing a wide range of skin concerns, trusted by 300,000 patients and 15,000 Dermatologists worldwide.

Today, it is known as HOO Center for Dermatology, a change of name that resulted in the broadening of its range of products and promise of results- credit this to HOO’s expert knowledge on skin treatments- branching out to a more comprehensive array of medical skin treatments using the latest lasers and machines, body contouring and weight management programs as well as plastic surgery procedures that enhance the face and body.” – (From the HOO website)

Like their name states, they are distributors of top skincare line Obagi.  I’ve been a loyal fan of their foaming cleanser, toner, and matte sunblock for the last few months. I love products that do what they promise to do.

They’ve also recently formulated their own line with the same high standards but at a more affordable price point.

For the last few months, I have been trying a number of HOO services like their Genesis Laser (which you can read about here) and their skincare ranges. I’ve also been doing their Diode Laser hair removal for my underarms.

I recently asked HOO Alabang’s resident board certified dermatologist Dr. Charina Pelayo to share more about the process involved in having Diode Laser Hair Removal and why you should go for Diode instead of IPL. Here are her answers below, plus images of a treatment being done:

What exactly is a diode Laser?

A diode laser uses a semiconductor device to produce a coherent projection of light in the visible to infrared range. It uses a light beam with a narrow spectrum to target specific chromophores (i.e. melanin) in the skin. The 800nm diode laser wavelength offers the deepest penetration levels and superior melanin absorption. These unique characteristics make the diode laser the most suitable technology for laser hair removal, enabling safe and effective treatment of all skin and hair types, in all areas of the body.

Why is a diode laser more effective than an IPL laser for hair reduction?

The diode is a LASER (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) machine which produces a single, concentrated wavelength of light. The diode precisely targets the melanin of your hair follicle, heating it up to disable its ability to grow, without affecting the surrounding skin.

IPL (Intense Pulse Light) on the other hand is not a laser. It’s a device that produces a broad spectrum of wavelengths of light that cannot be focused into a single beam. It’s like a “shotgun” approach to hair removal – because different wavelengths are dispersed at a variety of depths, only some of the light will be effectively absorbed by the hair follicle to achieve hair reduction. In addition, some of the dispersed light can be absorbed into the surrounding tissue as well, leading to possible heating of melanin present in the skin, thereby increasing the risk of burns for darker skin types.

The diode laser system therefore creates more heat directed at the hair follicle than IPL systems, hence achieving better results.

What areas for the body can be treated for hair reduction?

Laser hair removal systems can remove hair from any area of the body including the face, legs, arms, underarms and back. They can also treat sensitive areas like the areola and bikini area.

How many sessions on average will you need to be completely hair free?

We recommend that our clients undergo 6 to 10 treatments, with yearly touch-ups for new hair growth.

How much time should you have in between sessions

Between 4 to 6 weeks apart.

What possible side effects might happen?

Itching, redness and swelling of the hair follicles are to be expected after treatment. However, they rarely last more than 2 or 3 days. Being a LASER, burn is always a possible side effect which can be avoided by choosing the right treatment parameters.

Are there any individuals who should not have Diode laser hair removal?

Patients who have had prior problems with laser therapy should be carefully screened before treatment.

Treatment should not be attempted on patients:

* with a history of skin cancer or pre-cancerous lesions at the treatment area
* skin cancer
* dysplastic nevi
* tattoos
* significant concurrent conditions or any inflammatory skin conditions
* active cold sores , open lacerations or abrasions
* deep suntan, recent suntan, sunburn or artificially tanned skin.

Who are the best candidates for Diode laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal is great for people who are fed up of using the short term hair removal methods (such as waxing and shaving) and who would prefer to have long term “hair free” results.

I’ve personally done 5 sessions of Diode Laser on my underarms and it’s has been nothing short of amazing. I have maybe 2 or 3 strands left per underarm at this time. This is what happens during the session.

(Photos are of a model getting her underarms treated)

The treatment starts with an inspection of remaining hair then shaving of the area. If you want to help the environment, I suggest bringing your own reusable razor so they don’t have to shave you one time then throw the razor away. Once shaved, a cooling gel is placed on the area to numb it.

The treatment then proceeds with the Diode laser while the gel is on the skin. Treatment feels like a rubber band slapping the skin or little ant bites. It is is certainly a little more uncomfortable when you still have a number of follicles to zap away. The more sessions you have, the more manageable it is.

Once all areas have been treated, the gel is wiped away. There is often a little redness, but nothing extremely unsightly.

The area is then iced before a calming cream is put. I honestly find the icing portion more uncomfortable than the laser. You are then advised not to wet the area for at least 5 hours. The whole session takes less than 30 minutes and you can then go through your day without any down time.

HOO Center for Dermatology often offers a number of skin care and hair removal packages throughout the year.

My Tixel Experience at Amy Patdu MD Medical Clinic

I’ll be the first to tell you that I was not blessed with flawless skin. Blame it on genetics from both my parents, but I have been plagued with acne since I was 10 years old. I kid you not. It has taken quite a bit of hard work and investments to keep my skin from being permanently scarred and despite all efforts, i still have a few acne scars that I would prefer to be less noticeable.

Here comes Dr. Amy Patdu to the rescue, Amy is a board-certified dermatologist who uses the latest research and technology to help her clients reach their beauty goals. I know a number of women (my mom included) who visit her clinic regularly for their personalised treatments to combat acne, wrinkles, sagging skin, discolorations, etc.

Here’s something I’ve noticed from the women I know who visit Amy, they all look gorgeous but never fake. If there’s one tip I can offer those out there in search of a specialist to help slow down the signs of ageing, it’s to find a doctor whose face you like. Nothing frozen, stretched, or puffy. Ageing is a fact of life, we just need someone to help keep it at bay but never prevent it totally.

For my acne scars and need for a bit of skin rejuvenation, Amy recommended I try Tixel. I asked Amy to share a bit more about what Tixel is for my readers.

What exactly is Tixel?
Tixel is a new paradigm in skin rejuvenation, a non-laser fractional skin resurfacing treatment that transfers thermal energy to skin very quickly and safely.

What skin conditions can Tixel treat?
Acne scar/ active acne
Sun damage skin/hyperpigmentation
Sagging skin ( cheek and neck)
Lagging eyelids and puffy eye bags,
Deep wrinkles/lines, crow feet
Marionettes line (smoker’s lips)
Stretch marks
Décolletage/hand rejuvenation

How is Tixel different from other skin rejuvenation lasers?
Other skin rejuvenation lasers are more aggressive and affect more of the upper layer of the the skin. Tixel is as deep in penetrating as the laser CO2, but it is less aggressive and is safe enough to be used even on the entire peri-orbital without affecting the eyes. This gives you very little down time between treatments.

Also Tixel treatment allows better abortion of serums and creams specially within 6 hrs after. It opens up the channels allowing the passage and absorption of serums and creams.

It also changes the way botox can be applied for crow’s feet. No more needles. You just drop it on the treated area.

How often should you do Tixel to see results?
Usually you can see the full results one or two weeks after your first sessions. But in just a day or two you will notice healthier glowing skin.

How much time should you have between sessions?
Minimum of a month or maximum of two months, depending on skin’s condition and as per doctor’s advice.

What side effects can happen with Tixel?
Some patient experience swelling and redness after the treatment that may last for 2-6 hrs. Very minimal scabbing that lasts for 2- 3 days.

Who are the best candidates for Tixel?
Tixel is best for those who have the following conditions:
Drooping of eyelids
Acne scars
Sagging face cause by aging
Poor skin texture ( large pore, with scars, redness due to acne inflammation)

Who should not do Tixel?
People who are keloid formers.

How much are Tixel treatments at your clinic?
Our price is depends on the areas you want to treat; we offer treatment packages with big discount. Please visit our Facebook page for the updated promo offers.

Is there anything else you would like to add?
This is a very powerful machine that is very effective and safe. We make sure our clients gets the best treatment there is in the world combining knowledge, expertise and technology all together. We simplify your routine and give you best result.

Here is a video that helps explain how Tixel works:

My own experience:

I’ve done two Tixel treatments 2 months apart already and here is how it went.

A Tixel treatment at Amy Patdu starts with a cleaning of the skin then the application of Emla (a topical anaesthetic) to numb the skin a bit. This whole part of the treatment can take up to an hour, so it’s best to give yourself ample time. Once the Emla is wiped off, Amy begins the process of using Tixel on your face, neck, eyes, and even chest. It feel like little ant bites every time that the machine is stamped onto your skin but because of the Emla, the pain is very manageable. There is also a very faint burning smell, but much less than with other lasers that hit the surface of your skin.

After the treatment, your face feels tingly and numb. It’s recommended you wash with a gentle cleanser then use your trusted serum that night for maximum absorption as well as a strong moisturiser.  The next morning, my face feels a little drier but I didn’t notice any redness or scabbing from both sessions. By day two I woke up to skin that looks healthier and acne scars that are less dark.

In two weeks time I begin to notice in pictures that my skin looks healthier and my face well rested. Seriously, there is a significant difference. My indented acne scars are also a little better and continue to improve!

I’m genuinely convinced it works and have become a fan of this treatment and will continue to do it for maintenance or until Amy says I should stop. If there’s anyone out there in their 30s plagued with acne scars and looking for find a treatment to help make your skin more even toned, I can’t recommend Tixel enough.
