coffee

A few of you may remember that I once worked as a barista while doing my Master’s degree in Sydney. For half a year, I got up every morning at 5am and helped pump the city with its wakeup juice in between writing term papers and working on publishing projects.

I quickly discovered that coffee shops are one of the best ways to know the inner workings of a community. Few people stray from a cafe that makes their cup exactly how they like it, and this often leaves us baristas engaging in tons of small talk with wired regulars who rely on us to perk up their lives on a daily basis.

I still believe it was one of the best ways I got to know my new city and fall in love with its people. It also made me into a semi-coffee snob.

Since having moved back to Manila, the husband and I have cried over the lack of what we feel are decent coffee places in and around town. I’ve heard that Craft Coffee Workshop (owned by my friend Sly) is excellent, but just too far out of the way for us southern folks.

So when my friend Kristine texted last night inviting me to try a new coffee joint that recently opened in our neck of the woods, I jumped at the chance.

I’m happy to report that Magnum Opus Fine Coffees in BF has the most awesome latte I’ve sipped on this archipelago. Just the right balance of fresh roasted beans, smooth milk, and no bubbles.

Its owner, Jonathan, was a Craft MNL fan who wanted to bring their kind of serious coffee drinking enjoyment to the south and I’m thrilled to share that he’s done a pretty fine job.

Magnum Opus Fine Coffees #115 Aguirre Avenue, BF Homes, Parañaque City (across Tarlac Rice)

Opening hours: 10:30am-11pm Tuesday-Sunday/ 4:30pm-11pm Monday

* They just had their soft opening so be kind to them about their food menu. In fact, I’m sure they’d appreciate your feedback in that department.
