Cloth Diapers in the Philippines: Yay or Nay?

I was recently invited by Mothering Earthling, a one stop online shop for all the coolest baby and kid products in the country, to learn more about cloth diapers.

I have to admit that I do know how disposable diapers aren’t exactly the best thing for the environment (it’s been reported that it takes 550 years for one disposable diaper to fully decompose), but I’ve always been skeptical about the ease of use of cloth diapers.

So, I decided to ask Rone Guerrero, founder of Mothering Earthlings to help shed more light on cloth diapers and their benefits. Here are her answers:

What are the benefits of cloth diapers?
Cloth diapers are free of chemicals and dyes so they are best for your baby’s skin. Using cloth diapers you can also save money and be eco friendly.

How many sets should a parent own?
To be fully cloth diapering you would need 15-24 cloth diapers. (Cat JL: An average baby uses that many diapers in 2-3 days)

What is the best way to clean them?
Natural detergents should be used to clean cloth diapers – no dyes, no brightened, no fragrance, no softeners. Wash after each use. Take out the insert from the pocket of your diaper and wash separately. Do not bleach or exposure to high heat for prolonged periods of time. When soiled, solid poop will “plop” right off of the diaper into the toilet.

Are there any services you know that clean them here, like in the States?
Unfortunately, there aren’t any. (Cat JL: Feel free to take this idea)

Any other helpful tips you’d like to share?
Don’t leave the house without a wet bag to keep the soiled diapers!

Here are some cloth diapers available on the site (with descriptions from Mothering Earthling)

Bamboo Dappy:  This dappy is mostly made from real bamboo. Its inside and its pads are made from bamboo, while the outer cover is polyester. Its also made with some cotton material to make it more durable. Its adjustable to fit your baby from infancy to toddler (up to 3 years old – talk about savings!). It’s also snap style for tighter lock.

Baby Leaf: (Features)
– Generous sizing
– Snap buttons adjust the sizing to fit small, medium and large babies
– Trim, snug and comfortable stretch provide a custom fit
– Waterproof, outer layer prevents leaking
– Inner layer made of custom micro fleece keeps baby dry
– Wide slot opening makes it easy to stuff and remove insert
– Each diaper is bundled with 1 super absorbent 3 layer microfiber insert

Next 9:  Next9 cloth diapers are leakproof that grow with your baby.  Easy to use snaps can be adjusted to fit babies 7-35 lbs.

The verdict: I loved all these diapers. They were super soft and actually quite easy to use and wash. I’ve come to the conclusion that you don’t have to go to the extremes. There is nothing wrong with using both cloth diapers and disposable diapers for your littles ones. The ease of travelling with disposable diapers can’t be beat, but while you’re little one is just at home, why not invest in some cloth diapers to help the environment and save a little money? Nara agrees!
