You’d have to be living far from the reach of the internet to have not have heard of Adult Coloring Books. 
Trust me, it’s not as “naughty” as it sounds. Adult coloring books have been making waves all over the United States and the Philippines this year. Many people cite them as a way to relax and even meditate. Their patterns are often repetitive, intricate, and very beautiful.
I was recently invited by Fully Booked to give adult coloring a try. Based on what they know about my personality, they felt that these beautiful botanical books would be of interest to me.
So last weekend, I plopped myself on a big couch near the beach and decided to give it a try. I’ll admit, it actually felt a little intimidating at first. I love to watercolor, but these designs were made by artists whose talents far exceed my simple drawing skills and I felt like my coloring skills wouldn’t be doing justice to their creations.
But after a while, I finally decided to just let go and see where the picture would take me. My technique would be to choose one colored pencil and then shade certain patterns in the drawing with that hue till I felt it was time to switch to another pencil. I decided that once I committed to the color, I would just run with it.
After a while, I began to notice that I was no longer thinking about the drawing and just letting my thoughts run away while I shaded various parts of my piece. Before I knew it, after an hour of coloring, this is what my page looked like:
